Standing over four feet high, this very impressive carved oak figure shows Christ in a typical standing pose. He is shown with a beard and long curling hair and wears a cloak over an under tunic which is secured at the waist by a knotted belt. It is interesting to note the way that this tunic is carved at the neck where the treatment is very similar to that used on linenfold panels of the period. The back is hollowed out to avoid splitting, part of the right arm is missing and part of the left arm is later. Probably from the Limburg area of the East Netherlands circa 1530. For a figure of St John the Evangelist with very similar carving see catalogue no 10 in "Netherlandish Sculpture 1450-1550" by Paul Williamson.
