Probably dating from about 1530 this oak carved group depicts The Virgin Mary seated on a throne holding the Christ Child on her lap. She has her head inclined tenderly towards the Child and her long curling hair falls over her shoulders. An unusual feature is the way that the Child is holding her by the inside of her bodice with his right hand. The figure retains some of its original paintwork. East Netherlands, probably Limburg, the long flowing hair and hooded eyes are typical of work from the Circle of The Master of Elsloo. 22 inches high.
