Probably Flemish, this early 17th century oak figure depicts St Anthony as a bearded old man holding a rosary and a gnarled staff and he is accompanied by a pig. The medieval Antonine monks bred pigs and their lard was used as a cure for the skin infection erysipelas, otherwise known as St Anthony's fire. Anthony is the patron saint of the poor and needy as well of butchers and sausage makers. 13 inches high.
