A very rare and massive James I oak church chest of boarded form with a moulded edge one piece top held by its original wire hinges, the front decorated with fine quality carving featuring lunette, quatrefoil and floral designs. The carved spandrels original and the sides with Gothic arches. The interior has its original lidded till. The top appear to have been secured at some point and it is almost certainly a church piece intended for storage of documents, vestments or plate. Superb rich colour and patination. Circa 1620. 65 inches wide x 22 1/2 inches deep x 36 1/2 inches high.
