Recently bought back from an old customer, this large table standing spice cupboard is a wonderful example of English vernacular furniture and was probably made to celebrate a marriage or other important occasion. The door has parquetry inlay and depicts centrally a church with a spire below a large star. It is inlaid withe initials IB, probably meaning JB, and the date 1730. Also depicted on the door are crowns with crosses above and on the sides there hearts and other designs within a parquetry border. It stands on bracket feet and the hinges and lock are original with a working key. The interior has 17 small inlaid drawers with dovetailed linings of good quality with their original small brass knobs. It has superb honey colour and patination. It is 19 1/2 inches wide on the cornice x 11 inches deep x 31 inches high.
