It is hard to know exactly what this charming little boarded box was made for, but it is likely to have been to house something of value as it had a lock and must have been a costly piece to make. Sometimes they were intended to hold a chalice or gloves but we will never know. It is very well constructed of thin one piece oak boards. The lid is held by small strap hinges which are old replacements and the base board has a moulded edge. The front board is beautifully carved with nulling and scratch work carving with punched flowers. The colour and patination are outstanding. It measures 16 inches x 9 inches across the lid x 7 1/2 inches high.
