This charming little chair is a wonderful example of 18th century vernacular furniture. Essentially it is a hollowed out tree (the timber is quite hard to identify but it is probably chestnut or sycamore). It has been shaped to take a seat, half of which is fixed whilst the front section can be lifted and is held by a hasp. The back is shaped at the top and has a heart carved out as a carrying method. The base is boarded. It has wonderful colour and patination. It is 36 1/2 inches high, 24 inches high on the seat and has a diameter of 17 inches.
