This very interesting oak boarded box has a lid held by its original wire hinges and a long drawer at the base. The front board is chip carved on its edge and has a pair of roundels with fine quality Gothic carving which continues over the drawer front. This is without doubt original and is quite similar to a box that be seen illustrated in Chinnery page 143 Figure 2:189 which he dates to mid 16th century. The lockplates are original but the hasps are old replacements. There are traces of green paint or stain particularly on the roundels. It measures 28 inches wide x 16 inches deep x 15 inches high. It is very hard to date this extraordinary box but I have thought that is no later than early 17th century.
