In wonderful untouched condition, this exceptionally rare aumbry or table cupboard probably dates to about 1570 and is of free standing form. It has a cleated end top comprising two wide boards, a panelled front with a single door and the back and sides are of similar construction. It has heavy baluster turned legs and substantial stretchers. As well as having had no restoration of any kind, it has never been been stained and has a lovely natural finish. It was recently acquired from a long standing collection in a beautiful Suffolk manor house where it stood in the middle of the library. A similar but later and less heavily constructed example is shown in Wolsey and Luff fig 23. It measures 35 inches x 28 inches across the top and stands 32 inches high.
