A rare and small 17th century inscribed chest.

Probably dating from about 1660, this small boarded chest has a front board framed by a simple moulding and bears the carved inscription CHARLES VINE and this is undoubtedly original. Pepys mentions various Vines in his diary but I cannot find a Charles amongst them, although with its diminutive size it may have been made for child. The top board has a moulded edge and is held by iron strap hinges of unusual form - they are certainly period but may be 17th century replacements. The chest has attractive cut out sides forming the legs and has a narrow drawer at the base in with a moulded front and original turned knob handles. Lovely colour and patination throughout. Circa 1660, it measures just 34 inches wide x 13 inches deep x 22 1/2 inches high.
