A very interesting and heavily constructed comb back Windsor armchair in well figured elm. The chair has a shaped top rail and vasiform splat typical of Thames Valley armchairs with an unusually large arm bow and a very broad dished seat. The cabriole front legs are pegged through the seat with double tenons and the back legs are swept out to give the chair a pronounced rake to the back. There are traces of red stain on the splat and the chair has lovely rich colour and patination. One would expect the chair to be from the last quarter of the 18th century but carved under the seat is the inscription Jan.'Y 16. 1821 making it a fascinating documentary chair. 29 inches wide across the arms x 29 inches deep x 42 1/2 inches high.
