I am not normally a great fan of chair tables but I love this one because of its total honesty and simple charm. It is hard to be precise about the date - the gun barrel turned legs suggest mid 17th century but it may be a bit later. The top is constructed from two wide planks, held together by double tenons pegged together in the middle and there are cleats at the ends which incorporate the iron pins which form the swivel mechanism on the arms. The seat is formed from a single very wide board and the back legs and stretchers are square section. The back can be held in upright position by an oak turn buckle on the back of the seat rail and there is an ancient metal support on one of the cleats to give extra support. Apart from this it is in totally untouched condition with no replaced timber and the finish and patination are all that one want in a piece of 17th century oak. It is 31 inches 26 inches across the top, 52 inches high in the upright position, 30 inches high with the back in the down position and 19 inches high on the seat.
