Standing nearly three feet high, this large figure depicts St. Michael the Archangel and is probably from the Antwerp area of the Netherlands in the first quarter of the 16th century. St. Michael is shown in typical pose looking down and his surplice is parted to show Satan in the form of a serpent prostrate beneath his feet. He would originally have held a spear or sword and have had wings, the marks of which can be seen on his back. Apart from these losses, he is in a very nice untouched state and retains the original polychrome paint.
