A very stylish pair of transitional armchairs in black lacquer with vasiform splats decorated with Chinese ladies holding fans, curved arms, caned seats and unusual flat profile cabriole front legs and swept back legs joined by three stretchers. The flat profile legs have similarities with a set of four japanned chairs made for the Duchess of Lauderdale in about 1680 and are illustrated plate 450 in "Early British Chairs and Seats" by Tobias Jellinek. Circa 1740. 40 inches high and 16 1/2 inches seat height.
