This very interesting ash and beech armchair is likely to date from the last quarter of the 18th century and is from the relatively small area of the Vale of York. It has many of the features of the earlier examples of this type of chair including the split lath and barrel shaped arm supports and pronounced rake to the back. It has a superbly figured and well shaped ash seat and the beech legs are dowelled through the seat and secured with cross wedges. The chair retains quite a bit of its original green paint. See a very interesting article in the 2004 Regional Furniture Society Journal by Adam Bowett where he discusses these chairs in some depth. 41 1/2 inches high and the seat height is 17 1/2 inches.
