Set in its original olivewood frame, this beautiful little silkwork depicts Diana as a chaste lover embracing Endymion who was sent to sleep forever by Jupiter in return for perpetual youth. The scene is set in a leafy bower surrounded by animals and with a castle in the background. The figures are dressed in clothes typical o the Carolean period and have real hair. The subject was used as a symbol of timeless beauty that is "a joy forever". Verso it has an amusing inscription which reads "Supposed to be valuable" and underneath is written "I don't suppose it is". 11 1/2 inches x 9 1/2 inches.
