These fitted wall cupboards were usually found in stone built houses in the Lake District and were used to keep spices or salt. They were positioned near to the chimney or hearth to keep the contents dry. This example is dated 1683 and has the initials WC and KC who were presumably the husband and wife owners of the property. Most dated examples are from the 18th century and 17th century examples are quite rare. See Regional Furniture Society Journal 2010 pages 22-25 for an interesting article on such cupboards. 19 inches wide x 16 inches high.
