This important mid 18th century Thames Valley armchair is only the eighth chair with a definite attribution to John Pitt of Upton-cum-Chalvey (Slough). The chair has been inspected by Bob Parrot who co-wrote a lengthy article on John Pitt in the Regional Furniture Society Journal in 2005 and he has confirmed its attribution. As with the other known chairs, the chair is in cherry wood with a walnut arm bow and an elm seat. Typical features include the pronounced knee, exaggerated sweep of the cabriole back legs and a mark on the underside of the seat where a label was held by tacks. The measurements are also very similar to those of the other known examples. The extension to the crest was probably added soon after the chair's construction and there are other restorations. It is, however, a very rare and wonderful chair.
