Almost certainly originally an altarpiece, this type of Crucifixion Group is sometimes known as a "Crowded Calvary". It depicts the swooning Virgin Mary supported by St. John whilst St. Mary Magdalene kneels opposite her. Above are several more figures, some of them on horseback, probably including Longinus the lance bearer and Stephaton the sponge bearer. They look up towards the cross of which only the base remains. At the foot of the Cross another figure kneels and a skull and scourge are also depicted. A pair of very similar reliefs, almost certainly from the same workshop, were sold at Sothebys in 1995 and were described as South Netherlands, possibly Brussels and were sold with an estimate of £15,000-£20,000. Despite the damage and losses, this is an important piece dating from about 1500. It stands 38 inches high and is 23 inches wide.
