This large and important 14th century Madonna and Child Group is carved in limewood and has traces of the original paint. The Virgin sits on a seat known as the "The Throne of Wisdom" while the Christ Child sits on her knee. She retains her original removeable crown. Despite some losses, this is a very rare survivor from the mid 14th century. Probably from the Central European area known at the time as Bohemia. A similar example, illustrated in "Gothic Art in Bohemia and Moravia" by Albert Kutal fig 12, can be seen in the National Museum of Prague. The figure stands 41 inches high.
