This interesting pair of embroideries were almost certainly originally part of the orphrey from a chasuble used by a priest when celebrating Mass. The silk has retained excellent colour and it is enhanced by gilt thread. The figures hold a scroll and a purse and may represent the apostles Matthew and Paul. Their ecclesiastical garments date to the late 15th century. See fig. 73 (see image) in Janet Mayo's History of Ecclesiastical Dress which shows a chasuble, the orphrey of which depicts figures and the same lattice windows on either side. The embroideries are now set in later giltwood frames which measure 14 inches x 9 inches.
