It is hard to be sure exactly what this hexagonal oak box was made for. It stands about 11 inches high and has a single door. The top is moulded and the base plain which suggest it was meant to stand vertically and so it is unlikely to have been a candle box. It has a central fixing hole at the back which could mean it was meant to swivel and was likely to have held something of value. Although of simple design it is beautifully made. One conjecture is that it was intended to hold an hour glass and it is shown here with one fits neatly inside it.
