This burr elm travelling box probably dates to about 1800 and seems to be of a type that is specific to Somerset. Gabriel Olive discusses them in his book "Farm and Cottage Furniture in the West Country" pages 47-51. However, the examples he shows are of simple nailed construction and unmitred corners. This example is joined by fine quality dovetails and it is made of superbly figured burr elm. Its interior includes a lidded till with a secret compartment. 36 1/2 inches wide x 18 1/2 inches deep x 15 1/2 inches high.
