Dating from the first half of the 17th century, the carving on this little oak cupboard identifies it as being from Westmorland and there is an interesting article in the Regional Furniture Society Journal 2010 in which Sarah woodcock has a chapter on fitted wall cupboards in which she suggests that they were used for spices or salt. The front has a wonderful crusty finish which has never been touched and it has its original butterfly hinges. It measures 18 inches wide x 15 inches high x 7 inches deep (it was probably deeper when it was set into a wall but has bee reduced since).
