Dating from the last decade of the 18th century, this is a superb example of a Windsor armchair made by the renowned firm of Gillows of Lancaster. In excellent untouched condition, it is of typical Windsor spindle back design but has a number of features that mark it out as a Gillows chair. These include the exaggerated rake to the back, the broad arm bow and the slightly curved rear legs which are pegged through the seat. It is constructed in elm with a well figured slightly dished ash seat that is curved at the front. It has simple turned legs and a curved stretcher. It has a sculptural elegance but is very robust with no movement to the legs and is extremely comfortable. The colour and patination are excellent. It measures 26 inches wide across the arms and is 24 inches deep on the seat and 39 inches high.
