This rare medieval oak roof boss dates to the second half of the 15th century and is in wonderful untouched dry condition having never been waxed or restored in any way. Of typical form, it is deeply carved with four large and four small leaves with central raised disc and is a stunning example of the skill of late medieval English carving. On the underside it beats a small paper label which reads "from Bideford Church". In the recent auction by Woolley and Wallis "A Life in Oak" two slightly later roof bosses each fetched over £2000. It measures approximately nine inches square and is five inches deep.
