Probably dating from the end of the 15th century, this misericord is probably Scottish in origin and is of the type that was fixed to the seat rather than being hinged. Quite crudely carved, the central figure has an ape's head and is carrying a spear and a sword. It is of rotund shape, stands on hoof type feet and appears to be carrying a creature of some kind. In the middle ages the ape was a symbol of debased man and a representative of all types of sin. The seat is moulded and below this there is a sort of primitive egg and dart deoration. 12 1/2 inches wide x 6 1/2 inches high x 4 1/2 inches deep.
