Standing on good high legs and just under 30 inches wide, this very useful little oak chest would be ideal at the end of a bed. The top, back and sides are all double panelled and the bottom boards are original, albeit with some old reinforcing. The front is also double panelled and is carved with chevrons with and a rose. The top rail has fine quality strapwork carving that is typical of the West Country, in particular the county of Somerset. The wire hinges are original as is the iron escutcheon whilst the lock and keep are early replacements. Dating to about 1640, it has a lovely rich dark patination. It is 29 1/2 inches wide x 22 inches deep and is 27 inches high.
