This charming little mural cupboard probably dates to about 1640 and is probably of a West Country origin. Such cupboards have been described as livery cupboards or glass cases but in reality they were probably used to store anything of value that needed to kept out of the way of animals and children and often, as with this example, they had a lockable door to provide extra security. The carving is of excellent quality throughout and includes floral and and trailing leaf decoration and chevrons on the cupboard door and panels. Below the shelf there is a row of applied dentils. Wonderful colour and patination. The back has its original boards. Inside I found a small dealer's label which appears to date from 1918 and reads "Rare 17th century carved oak hanging cupboard. £60" It measures 29 inches wide on the cornice x 12 inches deep x 28 inches high.
