Dating to about 1765 and almost certainly from a Thames Valley workshop, this impressive armchair was clearly made to seat a large Georgian gentleman. It is constructed in elm with an ash seat and beech stretchers and has a yoke shaped crest rail, a double vasiform splat and shaped arm supports. The well figured ash saddle seat is two inches thick and has a piece of ash set in at the front of the seat that appears to be original judging by the wear and patination that exactly matches. It may be that the wood split when the leg was fixed through the seat and that rather than discard the whole seat they just fitted another piece in. It has robust cabriole legs at the front and turned legs at the rear which are slightly shaped and are joined by H stretchers. Wonderful untouched colour and patination. The chair was acquired from a very long standing specialist dealer who had it in his bedroom for decades. 24 inches wide (on the seat) x 17 1/2 inches deep (on the seat) x 42 inches high.
