A CHARMING PAIR OF KNEELING ANGELS HOLDING CANDLES
Probably German circa 1600, this pair of kneeling angels are based on the 15th century examples that were popular in early Renaissance Italy, particularly Florence. Although quite provincial they have great charm and would look wonderful on either side of an early figure such as the Virgin Mary. Of typical angelic form they have curling hair and are dressed in robes and would originally have had wings. The bases are carved , possibly representing clouds , and they have spike holes which suggests that they have been slightly elevated and intended t be seen from below. The figures are 11 1/2 inches high x 6 1/2 inches wide x 4 1/2 inches deep.
