Corner cupboards are not easy to sell these days for some reason, but I had no hesitation in buying this wonderful little example. The single door has a large fielded panel above which are two glazed panels, the glass of which appears to be original. The interior has two shaped shelves. However, the extraordinary thing about the piece is the survival in untouched condition of the fretted cornice. I can't do better than leave it to the little card which goes with the cupboard and reads "RARE ANTIQUE WELSH OAK CORNER DISPLAY CABINET, THE PANELLED DOOR PARTLY GLAZED. The interesting feature of this rare little cupboard is the scroll pediment pierced with the emblem of a wheel of longevity and good fortune within the sun's rays, this is sometimes found on Welsh Love Spoons, so this little piece was probably made for a wedding. PERIOD; 18th CENTURY." The card is that of the dealers J. Kyrle Fletcher Ltd of 79 High Street, Newport Monmouthshire. The well known dealers were members of the British Antiques Dealers Association from 1912-1966 and exhibited at the Grosvenor House Antiques Fair. Probably Glamorgan circa 1765. The colour and patination are excellent and it measures 23 inches wide, 16 inches to the corner and is 38 inches high including the 8 inch high cornice.
