Probably Malines circa 1600, this lovely little alabaster plaque depicts the Marriage at Cana, the scene of Christ's first public miracle. When at a wedding feast in the village of Cana in Galilee, the wine was exhausted and Christ asked for six stone jars to be filled with water and when it was tasted, it was found to be fine quality wine - a very useful miracle! Christ is shown seated at the centre of the table next to Mary his mother and other guests. The master of ceremonies is shown bottom right pouring out the wine from one of the jugs into a cup. There are traces of gilding particularly on the jugs. The plaque is set in a giltwood frame with typical Renaissance decoration. It measures 8 inches x 9 inches across the frame. A pair set in similar giltwood frames were sold at by Wilkinsons auction of the Contents of Twyssenden Manor in 2022 for £15,400 the pair.
