Probably German, this large and very deeply carved pair of carved oak panels are of excellent quality and are full of incredible detail. One is taken from the famous Durer engraving entitled Knight, Death and the Devil which depicts an armoured soldier on horseback with two devils on either side of him one of whom is carrying an hour glass whilst below are shown a hound and a serpent. The other shows Saint Hubert kneeling before a stag which has a crucifix in its horns, a vision that converted him to Christianity. Other details include an angel above bearing a cloth and three hounds below. I cannot find a Durer engraving of the subject but there is a miniature of the subject by Jean Bourdichon. Both carvings are set in arcaded panels with fine leaf decoration at the base. They measure 26 inches high x 15 1/2 inches wide x 3 inches deep.
