Recently acquired from a old farmhouse in Norfolk where it had been for generations, this interesting James I oak joint stool has had a tough life but has real character. Dating to about 1620, it has unusual turnings to the legs and the rails are carved with overlapping semicircles which create an effect of Gothic arches (see Early British Chairs and Seats Plate 312 for a stool with similar carving to the rails). Two of the stretchers are probably old replacements. Lovely rich colour and patination. Under the top it has the inventory brand JB. 18 inches x 10 inches across the top x 20 inches high.
