From the first quarter of the 19th century, this painting is in the manner of William Anderson (1757-1837) and is painted on a good handmade panel. The quality of the brushwork of the vessels and rigging is excellent. It shows a number of ships on a calm sea with the shoreline in the background. It appears to show a Royal Navy ship bearing a red ensign firing its cannons and sending a boarding party in a rowing boat over to a much smaller vessel which displays a black bull on its sail. It measures 21 inches x 17 1/2 inches across the giltwood frame.
