Probably dating to about 1760, this cylindrical wine bottle has a lovely dark colour and slightly deformed shape. It has an unusually large seal with the initials ASCR for All souls Common Room and is from the earliest period of such bottles. It measures 11 inches high. It was bought by the poet Anthony Thwaite following a dinner there with his fellow poet Philip Larkin when they were co-operating on the Oxford Book of 20th Century Poetry.
