This lovely Charles I bronze mortar is almost certainly from the Whitechapel foundry of John Clifton (1632-1640). A very similar mortar previously in his collection can be seen in Michael Finlay's "English Decorated Bronze Mortars" catalogue entry no. 87 and illustrated in colour plate 5a. The decorative waist band of scrolls and shell is exactly the same as is the general shape. Wonderful colour and rich patina. 7 inches diameter x 5 3/4 inches high.
