Probably dating to about 1600, this robust and very heavy armchair looks as if it has stood in a church for the last 400 hundred years and it has never been waxed or restored other than some ancient preservative treatment. It was bought in the West Country and is certainly from that part of the country. The excellent quality carving includes the rosette, guilloche, S scroll and quatrefoil designs that are common in Wiltshire, Gloucestershire and Somerset. The wonderfully worn seat is original and has a patch, probably as a result of a knot hole judging by the figuring in the timber. The arms also show a considerable amount of wear and the front legs and arm supports are substantially turned. There is a good rake to the back and it is remarkably comfortable. The overall height is 44 inches and the seat height is 19 inches.
