AN OUTSTANDING WILLIAM AND MARY OAK TABLE.

This very interesting oak table is of outstanding quality and one would usually expect it to be constructed in walnut. A similar table is illustrated in The Irwin Untermyer Collection, Fig 229 where it is pointed out the influence of the chest on stands of the period on its design. It has a thin moulded edge top above three false drawers, an arcaded apron and stands on six inverted cup and cover turned legs of great delicacy which terminate on their original bun feet (one at the back is probably an old replacement). The sides are double arcaded and it has elegant flat stretchers.
Whilst clearly influenced by chests on stands of the period this table has never supported a chest. The likelihood is that it was made to order for a specific purpose, possibly to support something such as an armillary sphere. The dark rich colour and patination are outstanding. Circa 1690. It is 34 inches wide x 23 inches deep x 28 inches high.
