Very heavy, this is a fine example of an early 17th century side chair with wonderful original tooled leather upholstery with Moorish designs depicting a rose on the back and lilies on the seat all secured by well patinated brass studs. The rear supports are topped with integral carved lion's heads which have wonderful wear from having been handled. It has turned baluster legs terminating on well worn toes and double stretchers, the upper ones with channel mouldings and the lower ones with carved undersides. The colour and patination of both the leather and walnut are superb. It is interesting that one can see very similar chairs with lion finials in one or two of Vermeer's paintings, for example Lady with a Glass of Wine. It is 40 1/2 inches high overall with a seat height of 20 inches.
