Pairs of joint stools are not easy to find although originally they were probably made in sets of six or more. A pair from the Doughty Manor Collection were sold for over £10,000. This elegant pair date to about 1640/50 and have well figured tops which are 3/4 inch thick, have thumb nail moulded edges and are secured by pegs in each corner. The rails are quite broad and are finely carved with trailing foliage above a channel moulding. They have ring turned columnar legs terminating on their original, although rather worn, toes. They have a lovely nut brown colour with excellent patination. The tops are 17 inches x 10 inches and they stand 20 1/2 inches high.
