This rare little table probably dates to about 1740 and is from Connecticut in New England. It is constructed in curly maple and is of a type commonly referred to as butterfly tables on account of the shape of the supports. The top is very thin as is typical with this type of table but is not damaged or warped. It has rule joint edges and is held by its original butterfly hinges. The legs are baluster turned and retain their original toes and have the exaggerated splay that is common with this type of table. It comes with an excellent provenance and is illustrated in "Furniture of the Pilgrim Century" by Wallace Nutting 876 as well as it another of his books "Furniture Treasury" fig 923 where he erroneously describes it late 17th/early 18th century. At the beginning of the 20th century the table belonged to George F. Ives, a collector of antiques and Americana who also acted as dealer. In 1918 he purchased a neglected property called The Old Brookfield Tavern in the Parish of Newbury and carefully moved it piece by piece some eight miles to nearby Danbury as somewhere to display his collection. The table measures 33 1/2 inches x 24 inches with the leaves extended and stands 26 1/2 inches high. With the leaves down it is 10 inches across.
