Dating to the second half of the 15th century, this Nottingham alabaster depicts the Assumption and Crowning the Virgin. She is shown in typical style with her hands outstretched in prayer below her crown which is held by two arms. She is surrounded by angels and other figures - see Francis Cheetham "English Medieval Alabasters" pages 206 and 207 for similar examples. Interestingly it was found in the Bordeaux area of France to where it was probably exported in the 15th century during the extensive trade that took place during the time with works of art and wine regularly crossing the Channel. Although it has losses and some old restoration, it is a wonderful piece. The back bears a mark, probably that of the carver. It measures 12 inches x 19 inches across the oak frame and 10 1/2 inches x 16 inches on the alabaster it self.
