Probably dating to the last quarter of the 18th century, this ash and elm armchair has a crest rail incorporating a fan design. The pierced splat is of Chippendale design and the arm-bow supports are of crescent type. It has a lovely well worn dished saddle seat and through which the legs are pegged. The legs are rectangular in shape with grooved decoration. The underside of the seat has a considerable amount of original green paint and traces of this and black paint are evident in various places suggesting it is probably of West Country origin. For a similar chair see "The English Windsor Chair" by Thomas Crispin page 63 (see photo). Height 41 inches x 22 1/2 inches wide on arm-bow x 15 inches seat height.
