Probably English and dating to about 1740, this extraordinary painted and carved bracket is supported by an intricately carved figure with the head and upper body of a woman and below the waist she has a pair of scaled and entwined limbs terminating in webbed flippers as in a form of mermaid. She holds a serpent in one arm and supports a scallop shell with the other. The figure has been painted green at some point and then white later. It is of large size being 26 inches high and the shelf is 17 inches wide x 11 1/2 inches deep. It would make a superb support for a large vase or something similar.
