As described in the caption for the previous item, Mary Heard was the mother of Tom Cobley of "Widecombe Fair" fame. Like that of her son, the portrait is in good untouched condition and a photograph of the back shows that the canvas lining and stretchers are the same and that they were painted simultaneously by the same artist, possibly a Devon based artist or a visiting Dutch portrait painter. She was described in the article in the Antiques Trade Gazette as Cobley's "kind eyed but rather plainer mother". The portrait also measures 32 inches x 37 inches across the giltwood frame.
