An oil on canvas portrait of a lady with curled hair and an elegant dress. In good untouched condition including the original lining, it is attributed to William Whitby. He is recorded in The Dictionary of British 18th Century Painters as having flourished 1772-1791 and who had exhibited at The Royal Academy and elsewhere during the last quarter of the 18th century. On the back of the frame it has two hand written labels reading "William Whitby fl. 1772-1791. Portrait of a lady. No.50." and "Midlington House, Droxford, Hampshire". The house may have been built by Peter Barfoot who is recorded as having lived there in 1770 and it is possible that the portrait shows his wife. It measures 32 inches x 37 1/2 inches across the frame and 25 inches x 30 inches across the canvas.
