Dating to about 1510 this fine painted limewood carving shows St. Anne and the Virgin. St. Anne may have originally been holding a book and teaching the Virgin to read. St. Anne is shown wearing a veil with her head slightly inclined whilst the young Virgin is bareheaded apart from a hairband with her hair hanging down to waist. For a very comparable example which is in the Victoria and Albert Museum see "German Sculpture 1430-1540" albeit that St. Anne is shown seated. It is described as Upper Palatinate or Lower Bavaria. 30 1/2 inches high including the later socle.
