A proper piece of old fashioned English oak furniture of the finest quality, this cupboard dates to about 1640 and has an excellent provenance having come from the Groombridge Place, Kent collection when it was sold by Sothebys in 1992. It has a chip carved top rail above pair of four panelled doors held by their original butterfly iron hinges. The smaller top panels are superbly carved with chip carved nulling and it has panelled sides and a boarded back. Wonderful rich dark colour and patination. Probably originally a robe cupboard, it has a brass rail and also some later shelves, so it could be used for hanging clothes or for general storage. It is being sold for considerably less than it fetched in 1992. Circa 1640. 59 1/2 inches wide x 21 inches deep x 70 1/2 inches high.
